Privacy Policy
Draft — not yet finalized
Who we are
Kanim operates a peer-to-peer platform that connects people sending items with travelers already flying the same route who agree to carry them for pay. This policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and what rights you have over it.
Kanim currently operates between Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana and the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada, and our data practices reflect that we hold, process, and transfer information across those countries.
Information we collect
Account information: your full name, email address, phone number, and password.
WhatsApp alerts (optional): if you turn them on, your WhatsApp number and the time you agreed, so we can message you about your items, trips and messages. You can turn them off in Notification settings or by replying STOP.
Identity verification: a photo of a government-issued ID (passport, driver's license, or national ID), which we use to confirm you are who you say you are before you can post or carry items. This is one of the most sensitive categories of information we hold, and we treat it accordingly.
Listings and trips: item descriptions, weight, and photos you post as a sender; route, travel dates, and available capacity you post as a traveler.
Payment information: we do not store your card, bank account, or full payment details ourselves. Payments are processed by Stripe or Paystack depending on your route's currency, and we store only what's needed to reference a transaction (such as a payment status and a provider-issued reference) and, for travelers, a payout destination reference from our payment processor.
Dispute and support information: if you report a problem with a delivery or contact us for help, we keep a record of what you told us so we (and, where relevant, an admin reviewing the case) can act on it.
Communications: if you email us or otherwise contact us, we keep a record of that correspondence.
How we use your information
To verify your identity and decide whether to let you post or carry items.
To operate the core service: matching senders and travelers, processing payments, and releasing payouts once a delivery is confirmed.
To communicate with you about your account, a specific listing or trip, or a payment or dispute.
To investigate and resolve disputes, and to detect and prevent fraud or misuse of the platform.
To comply with legal obligations, including responding to lawful requests from authorities.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your ID document or payment information for advertising.
How we share your information
With the other party to a match: when you're matched, the sender and traveler can see the information needed to complete the handoff — for example, name and the item or trip details. We don't share your ID document image or full contact details beyond what's needed to coordinate the delivery.
With service providers who help us run the platform: Stripe and Paystack (payment processing), Supabase (account authentication, database, and file storage), Twilio (WhatsApp alerts, only if you opt in), and our email/waitlist provider. Each only receives what it needs to do its job.
For legal reasons: if required by law, subpoena, or other legal process, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Kanim, our users, or the public.
In a business transfer: if Kanim is involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction, subject to this policy or a successor policy you're notified of.
International data transfers
Because Kanim connects people across Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, the UK, the US, and Canada, your information may be stored and processed in a country other than the one you're in. Where required by applicable law, we rely on appropriate safeguards for these transfers.
Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active, plus a reasonable period afterward to meet legal, tax, fraud-prevention, and dispute-resolution obligations. ID documents and payment records are generally retained longer than other data for these reasons.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain uses of it. This includes rights that may be available under Nigeria's data protection law, Kenya's Data Protection Act, Ghana's Data Protection Act, the UK GDPR, Canada's PIPEDA, and applicable US state privacy laws.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details below. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request, and some information (such as records needed for tax or dispute purposes) may need to be retained even after a deletion request.
Data security
We use industry-standard measures — including encrypted storage and access controls — to protect your information. No system is perfectly secure, and we can't guarantee absolute security, but we work to reduce risk and to respond quickly if something goes wrong.
Children's privacy
Kanim is not intended for anyone under 18. We don't knowingly collect information from minors, and we'll delete any such information if we become aware of it.
Cookies and similar technologies
We currently use only the cookies strictly necessary to keep you signed in and to operate the platform securely. If that changes — for example, if we add analytics — we'll update this policy.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the platform evolves. If we make a material change, we'll take reasonable steps to let you know before it takes effect.
